Cheshire Crossing Animal Hospital provides laser surgery for dogs and cats in Columbus, Ohio, and the surrounding area. Our doctors perform surgical procedures using a state-of-the-art surgical laser which provides many benefits to our patients. Because the laser cauterizes as it cuts, there is less bleeding, pain and swelling which provides a reduced risk of infection and a quicker recovery for your pet.

Benefits of Laser Surgery

  • Less Bleeding: the laser seals small blood vessels as it cuts

  • Less Pain: the laser seals nerve endings for a more comfortable recovery

  • Reduced Risk of Infection: the laser kills bacteria in its path

  • Quicker Recovery: the above benefits all lead to a quicker recovery for your pet

When we will explain the upcoming procedure for your furry companion, we do our best to give you an accurate picture of what will happen on the day of surgery. Please understand that we take every precaution we can to minimize the risks associated with anesthesia, surgery and post-operative care. In specific circumstances, we will include any additional diagnostics that may be specific to your pet.

What is a Laser?

A LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission Radiation) is a device that generates a beam of light energy at a specific wavelength. The most common veterinary surgical laser is the CO2 laser, which is commonly used for ovariohysterectomy (spay) or castration (neutering), as well as skin tumor removal, eyelid surgery and some mouth and throat procedures.

The wavelength of the CO2 laser beam is absorbed by the water found in skin and other soft tissue, vaporizing the cells and thereby “cutting” the tissues. The doctor can control the extent to which the laser beam is absorbed into the surrounding tissue, allowing extreme surgical precision.
